A. Van Doren Honeyman was born at New Germantown (now Oldwick), Hunterdon county, New Jersey, on November 12, 1849, the son of Dr. John Honeyman, a physician, who practiced there for over fifty years, and Elizabeth (Nevius) Honeyman. Dr. John Honeyman's parents were James and Mary (Miller) Honeyman, of New Germantown, and his grandfather was John Honeyman, Scotch-Irish, from County Armagh, Ireland, who came to America in 1758 as a soldier, to serve with General Wolfe, and was one of Wolfe's private guards when that general fell at Quebec, in 1759. Subsequently he went to Philadelphia, and there married Mary Henry, also Scotch-Irish. During the Revolutionary War he resided at Griggstown, Somerset county, New Jersey, and acted in the secret service of General Washington. He died August 18, 1822, in his ninety-third year. The subject of this sketch received his early education at Barnet Hall Academy, New Germantown, New Jersey, studied law with his brother-in-law, Hon. Henry D. Maxwell, at Easton, Pennsylvania, and was admitted to the Northampton county (Pennsylvania) bar in 1870. Subsequently he entered the office of Hon. Alvah A. Clark, of Somerville, and was admitted as attorney in this State in June, 1871, and as counselor in February, 1875. As soon as admitted he became a law partner of Mr. Clark's, the firm name being Clark & Honeyman. In 1872 he began practice for himself in Somerville; in 1874 the late Judge Henry B. Herr, of Flemington, was taken into partnership, the firm being Honeyman & Herr. Mr. Honeyman ceased practicing law in January, 1876, when he purchased and also edited the "Somerset Gazette,” at Somerville. Previously, in 1873, he had edited "Our Home," a monthly historical magazine. In 1882 the “Gazette" was merged into the "Unionist-Gazette," which he controlled, and of which he continued editor until 1891. Then, selling his stock in that newspaper, he purchased the “Trenton Times," a daily, but sold it after one year, when he removed to Plainfield, and has resided there ever since. He was assistant secretary of the New Jersey Senate, 1886-1889, but has otherwise held no office, except, for several years, when he served on the Board of Education of North Plainfield. In 1878 he founded the "New Jersey Law Journal," and has edited it from 1896 to the present. From 1912 to 1919 he edited the "Somerset County Historical Quarterly," and from 1920 to the present the "Proceedings of the New Jersey Historical Society," which is also a quarterly. Of the latter society he is the corresponding secretary. Otherwise than above Mr. Honeyman has written or edited various New Jersey and general law books, certain volumes of the “New Jersey Archives," a number of volumes of foreign travel, three large genealogical works, and many miscellaneous books and pamphlets. He has also managed over one hundred tours in Europe, Asia and America, these being considered his “vacations." Mr. Honeyman was married, August 3, 1875, to Julia E. Reger, of Somerville.
