"MEETING OF THE AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL CONVENTION AT ADELAIDE IN 1897.

We have here a representation of the meeting in Adelaide of the Australian Federal Convention. A new epoch in the history of Australia may be said to have been marked by the practically unanimous vote recorded by this important Assembly, after much deliberation, to accept the principle of a Federal Union between the Colonies, subject to the terms of a Constitution regulating the occasions upon which the Federal Authority should be invoked, and limiting the subjects to which it should extend. The union of the provinces of the Canadian Dominion has so greatly enhanced the dignity and increased (he strength of Canada that much may be hoped from the Australian Federation Act, in which the labours of the Convention have come to fruition."
