English: Ankylosed 2nd and 3rd horse metacarpals (Stage 2) with a massive exostosis on the proximal anterior and medial surfaces together with pitting of the articular surface typical of infective arthritis.
Description: Horse 2nd and 3rd metacarpals from the phase 1b pit (12th - 13th centuries) of the Lower Ford Street site, Coventry. This feature contained a large deposit of cattle and horse bones amounting to 27Kg in weight. The metacarpals are fused to Stage 2 and display a massive exostosis on the proximal anterior and medial surfaces together with pitting of the articular surface. This is considered to be typical of infective arthritis.
