Deutsch: "In der Seeschlacht von Lepanto im Golf von Korinth am 7.10.1571 siegten die vereinigten spanischen, päpstlichen, venezianischen, genuesischen und toskanischen Flotten über die Kriegsschiffe Sultan Selims II. Damit war die Vorherrschaft der Türken und der in ihrem Dienst stehenden nordafrikanischen Piraten im Mittelmeer gebrochen. Das Gemälde zeigt vor einem Hintergrund mit Kriegsschiffen Don Juan d’Austria (1547–1578), den außerehelichen Sohn Karls V., Marc Antonio Colonna (1536–1584), den Anführer der päpstlichen Truppen, sowie Sebastiano Venier († 1578), Prokurator von San Marco. Die Prunkharnische der drei waren in der Ambraser »Heldenrüstkammer« ausgestellt. Das Gemälde gehörte zur Ausstattung des sog. Neuen Saales von Schloss Ruhelust (s. Nachlassinventar 1596)." |
