About to try brewing fresh wormwood tea 🍵. Ubiquitous at souk markets, I’ve been curious if the taste compares to Ricard or pastis🍹. Wormwood is an ingredient in absinthe… is it toxic? I have to do some research first! 🌿

I started with a few small sprigs simply steeped in hot water. My initial reaction was “yuck”… tasted bitter and harsh, more like pine resin, less like pastis. I then tried boiling it on the stove and the liquid turned more intense green. Seemed pleasantly velvety, but really bitter. Adding lots of sugar made it almost palatable, not something I’d drink voluntarily though. But its mystique sure makes up for all the trouble, I guess. I’ll find out before I leave Morocco if wormwood can become acquired taste.
