Description
Nederlands: Deze nieuwskaart van de Nederlandse verovering van de stad Colombo op Ceylon in 1656, vormt een van de vele prenten bij het reisverslag van de wereldreiziger Johan Nieuhof. Nieuhoff vergezelde van 1655 tot 1658 een delegatie van de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie naar de Keizer van China. Het reisverhaal dat hij na zijn terugkomst liet publiceren was een van de grote bestsellers van zijn tijd.
English: This news print from the Dutch conquest of the town of Colombo in Ceylon in 1656 was included in the richly illustrated travel journal of Johan Nieuhof, a worldtraveller from Amsterdam. Nieuhoff accompanied from 1655 to 1658 a delegation of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to the Emperor of China. After his return he had his journals published. The book was one of the great bestsellers of its time.
