Summary edit

Description

NPS/Patrick Myers

Avocets typically arrive to nest in wetlands west of the dunes in April, which is Colorado's second snowiest month of the year. The father and mother avocet take turns protecting the eggs from snow and cold. (This photo was taken with a long zoom lens while the parents were temporarily away, so the nest was not disturbed). Photo of father avocet in the snow near this nest is also on this page.
