Description
English: Childrens Seat. Porcelain garden seat decorated in underglaze cobalt blue. Qing dynasty, Qianlong period (1736-95). Sets of low porcelain seats were used outside. They were durable in all weathers, and cool to sit on during hot, humid summers. This seat is shaped like a drum, with imitation studs. On the top is painted a flower surrounded by six holes, four stylised shou characters meaning long life, and two bats signifying double happiness. Round the side are many versions of the character shou, with at the base and round the top two ornamental borders containing baoxiang flowers. Baoxiang are auspicious, composite flowers with formal scrolling leaves.
