The Grand Place also is the central square of Brussels. It is surrounded by guildhalls, the city's Town Hall, and the Breadhouse. The square is the most important tourist destination and most memorable landmark in Brussels. It measures 68 by 110 meters (223 by 360 ft), and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The row of houses on the northwest side of the Grand' Place are the most elegant of all. There are six named houses. The second and third from the left are: Le Cornet (The Horn), which is the Boatmen's Guild. It is one of the easiest to identify because of its large stern-shaped gable. (second from left) La Louve (The She-Wolf), which is the Archers' Guild. It can be recognized by the gilded phoenix rising from the ashes on top of the building. The phoenix represents the rebirth of the Grand Place after its destruction in the late 18th century by revolutionaries. (third from left) |
