Red archivesEdit

Just curious, but why are there twenty (20) links in your archive navigation box? It just seems odd. It skips 31 (thirty-one) and goes straight to 50 (fifty). --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 06:57, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

--Wilfredor (talk) 23:53, 20 April 2019 (UTC)

Considering the magnificient sharpness this really is a QI. I'd just like to ask if you could do something with that rest of lens distortion. --PtrQs 23:30, 27 April 2019 (UTC)

PhotographieEdit

--Cephas (talk) 22:44, 27 June 2019 (UTC)

It's only a few weeks until Wikimania 2019 in Sweden. I'd like to invite you to the Commons Photographer's photo walk. Dear Frank Schulenburg, thank you very much for your invitation and I would really love a lot to do this walk, however, my scholarship was rejected, sorry maybe in a future opportunity --Wilfredor (talk) 03:40, 1 July 2019 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2019Edit

Hallo Wilfredor,

Important message for file moversEdit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

CongratulationsEdit

I see you won 5 of the top 10 photos in WLM Canada. Well done! I was not so lucky this year. -- Colin (talk) 09:25, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

Colin Thank you Colin for your congratulations, as usual I am not very happy with the result of the WLM evaluations (Maybe they should take into account the community by selecting juries among commons users and not clubs or photographers of interredicha quality who don't know the criteria of our community). I remember having stopped participating in WLM Venezuela since the winners were selected with Facebook likes also the best photographer in commons of Venezuela withdrew from commons due to this problem (User:Paolostefano1412). In the case of Canada, I don't know how the photographs were evaluated and it would be very easy to say from my winning position (I won 5 pictures of the top 10 of the winners) that I strongly agree but no, I think there were many better photos even than the first place that were not selected, It also leaves much to think about the third place that is not even a monument. Anyway, it is already something known, these contests say absolutely nothing, and every year they lose more participation. --Wilfredor (talk) 14:02, 11 November 2019 (UTC)
Yes WLM at the country-level is often disappointing with several images in each country's top 10 that are just awful technically, or unoriginal. Lighthouses always seem to do well, for some reason. The UK "interior" winning entry is just awful quality from a mobile (and not one of the new ones we talked about with amazing computational photography). The Canada #8 is also terrible quality and just a tourist snap. The UK #4 has a photo of statue facing away which I can't see any merit for. It doesn't put me off entering, since I'd have been taking and uploading the photos anyway, but it does make me upset that so much volunteer time is spent reviewing the images and then the judges for the final selection just blow it with weird choices. Good luck for the international competition -- some serious money available there. -- Colin (talk) 15:31, 11 November 2019 (UTC)
I have been reviewing in more detail the winners of the countries and I have encountered serious problems, such as false images (see false moon in Brazil) or with excessive processing. Leaving aside that some winning images give little or no importance to the main objective that is the Monument. I honestly think that some results are disrespectful to photographers. Photos taken by phone are selected in many cases with saturation filters, I hope that the international jury will be something more serious. --Wilfredor (talk) 18:28, 11 November 2019 (UTC)
Colin There is a common practice that I have been following not only in photography events and this practice is carried out regardless of nationality, they work this way: 1) A false community of members is created. (This is particularly evident, it can be easily observed by their contributions and user pages (user pages are created by the same chapter president)). 2) A group or chapter is created with this fictional community 2) This fictional community (which simulates representing 20 people when in reality they are two maximum) or chapter begins to organize an event (WLM, WLE, Wiki Loves University, WXX .. ) and request a grant. 3) As the main objective is to obtain financing, the event is carried out with a mediocre quality due to a fictitious jury, images evaluated by people with little or no knowledge in photography. The main purpose is to obtain grants where WMF also benefits. This begins to become more in practice than the exception, so these events have declined a lot in both participation and quality. Photographers feel disappointed by the results. I have denounced this several times, but I think that more and more this project has deviated in a more monetary interest than by sharing knowledge to humanity. --Wilfredor (talk) 15:45, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

Also came by to say congratulations. WikiConference North America was last week in Cambridge, Massachusetts (a pretty big Wikimedia conference). It was there they first revealed the winners of WLM USA and CA. They displayed each winning image in order, announcing the name of each photographer. When they went through Canada, it was funny that again and again they said the name "Wilfredor". I think some people thought the slide text was accidentally copy/pasted, and eventually they added "Wilfredor is a very skilled photographer" for context. :) — Rhododendrites talk |  23:35, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

@Rhododendrites: Thank you for commenting on this, however, it is not that I doubt my abilities but I think it is more a lack of participation of photographers in the country. How to instill more participation ?, making more propaganda, improving the list of monuments and better evaluating the photos. I may take over WLM next year, it's something I've talked to WMCA --Wilfredor (talk) 00:35, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
If you'll still be in Canada next year, they announced that the conference will be held in Toronto next year. The press around that may present a good opportunity to also talk about WLM? — Rhododendrites talk |  00:49, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
@Rhododendrites: Thanks for your idea, and yes I live in Canada, however, I live far away of Toronto (I'm on Quebec city) and I don't know if I am available to travel to Toronto and not only for the cost this represents because I have a job to fulfill, the only reason I would go is if Colin goes too to know him. --Wilfredor (talk) 15:40, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
I've never seen WLM mentioned on photography websites or magazines. In contrast, other large photo competitions do get a mention both when they start and when the prizes are nominated. This is something the organisers could improve, both at national level, and perhaps international/WMF level. --Colin (talk) 10:41, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
@Colin: For example, I cant find a wiki page where WLMCA that clearly shows the prizes and btw this year I got the second position and I only realized that I had won after seeing the WLM oficial list of winners, none of the WLMCA organizers gave me any prizes or even a congratulations email. The photographers seek recognition or awards, when these things are not clear, and we add the element of an unclear jury, then the result is low participation --Wilfredor (talk) 15:40, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 in Canada is the only page I can find. In the UK there is a dedicated website with Judging and Prizes page. Perhaps Canada has no prizes? That would be sad. In the past, when I have won a prize, I was told in advance and asked to keep quiet about it just before it was announced. You can see the Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2019/Participating countries with contact people. User:Rhododendrites do you know anything about this? What is the conference you say is in Toronto? I thought Wikimania 2020 is Bangkok. --Colin (talk) 12:30, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
WikiConference North America. I don't know how definite the location is. There was an announcement that Wikimedia Canada would be hosting and that it would be in Toronto. Of course, WMF's been cutting funding for chapters and events, and this year's Wikicon only happened because of a partnership with CredCon (i.e. private funding :/ ), so we'll see what happens next year. — Rhododendrites talk |  14:43, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
Hello! I tried to participate some years ago in WLM and in WLE but it was very confusing. For WLE first I took some pictures in the conservation areas and after the beginning they just explained that the pictures must be from the provincial and national parks, it was not written anywhere. And, yes, some choices made by the jury were disappointing. Maybe I am not so professional, but still some just normal pictures to illustrate articles are better than nothing. Anyway, nice to hear that we have people who are caring about Wikipedia pictures. All the best! Mykola Swarnyk (talk) 05:38, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

Wiki Science Competition 2019Edit

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.

If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Editing my talk page.Edit

Please do not remove anything from my talk page. I believe strongly that in order to be as transparent as possible we should never actually delete anything -- when people want to retract things, they are expected to strike them out, not delete them. I also wonder why you think you have the right to remove something from my talk page -- even something written by a serious nuisance block evader.

BTW, I really like this: File:Metro de São Paulo, Luz Station, Brazil.jpg.

Your best shot 2019Edit

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

It's early 2020, which means it's time again to look back at photographs taken over the course of the past 12 months. As always, I'm curious – what would you consider your best shot of 2019 and why? I invite you to share your image and your thoughts in order to provide others with the opportunity to celebrate, learn, and enjoy:

Your best shot 2019

Thanks for all your effort in sharing your vision of the world with others under a free license!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:58, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

Frank Schulenburg thanks, however, I'm developing my best shoot of 2019, I hope spend two month to develop and select the best. :) --Wilfredor (talk) 14:06, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

Bot taskEdit

Hi Wilfredor,

Following up on our IRC conversation as you left before I could respond. If you run this task on your main account, after being told your bot task would not be approved, you will be blocked. You have been told about the venues available to make this change across the approx. 40,000 pages, and I have personally offered to do this for you on a bot account. If you would like me or another bot operator to do this for you, then let us know. Otherwise, consider this a warning. ~riley (talk) 20:36, 25 January 2020 (UTC)

Dear User:~riley, Sorry I had to go out to eat quickly, then I was doing it manually with VFC (recomended by a user in the same IRC conversation), however, it is a very difficult job (you need load too much images in the browser) and not to annoy others with this matter, but if you are available, thank you very much for do that --Wilfredor (talk) 22:07, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
User:~riley I didn't know that using VFC could block me, I thought you were referring to pywikipediabot --Wilfredor (talk) 22:17, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
The conversation and my onwiki warning were clear. VFC was recommended by another editor before you informed us the task involved 40,000 files. Once you informed us of the task size, both him and I agreed you needed a bot flag to complete a task of this size. After being told your own personal bot would not be approved, you were informed that you would need to make a request at Commons:Bots/Work requests. Yes, you can be used for blocking VFC. Especially when you configure the script by overriding the maxSimultaneousReq to increase from 10 to 50 (5x) which allowed you to hit 1038 edits per minute. You, and you alone are responsible for your actions. ~riley (talk) 22:33, 25 January 2020 (UTC)

Your account has been blockedEdit

-- ~riley (talk) 22:21, 25 January 2020 (UTC)

Unblock request granted

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, and one or more administrators has reviewed and granted this request.

Request reason: "* There was a conversation on IRC about changing my previous user's name, because this makes it easier for me to find my same photos and be able to use them in a wikimedia project.
  • I commented that I was configuring pywikipediabot to do this, however, I was announced not to use it because my user would be blocked.
  • I decided to use VFC on a recommendation from a user in the same IRC conversation.
  • I allready used VFC for replacement tasks many times and I was never blocked, using the same mechanism to add or remove categories or templates of miles of items in the same time and I was never blocked.
  • There is no warning on the VFC page about blocking due to the use of this tool.
  • Also I allready used similar editions with severals gadgets like cat-a-lot and I was never blocked.
  • I have been blocked because the VFC tool does not know how to limit the number of edits per minute? Anyway I will stop using this tool until this problem is corrected in the tool. A wrong value on my commons.js
--Wilfredor (talk) 22:31, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
"
Unblock reason: "Unblock granted, continuing block at this point would be punitive as user has now demonstrated awareness for their actions. I have reduced their maxsim setting in their common.js to prevent such a high edit rate in the future, and the user is aware that it is not appropriate to take on such large tasks without bot flag, regardless of the tool being used. ~riley (talk) 06:32, 26 January 2020 (UTC)"

  • Requesting an unblock less than 30 minutes after being blocked shows you have not taken the time to consider your choices. The conversation was explicitly clear - You were informed both by myself and the user who originally recommended VFC that you needed a bot flag. You left the chat saying "I am going to do this manually", so I proceeded to leave you an onwiki formal warning not to complete the task on your main account.
The VFC tool does know limits in terms of edits per minutes, however, you have configured it to edit at extreme rates as indicated by User:Wilfredor/common.js which shows "maxSimultaneousReq:50" - this controls your edit speed by setting the maximum API requests you can send to the server, the default is 10, so yours is 5x higher than the default.
I have reduced your block to 24 hours, but have maintained it, because it is clear you do not have an understanding that you are responsible for your edits. Editing at 1000+ edits per minute, with a meaningless edit summary is unacceptable, especially after being told this task requires a bot flag. ~riley (talk) 22:45, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
riley maxSimultaneousReq It has been there with the same value for almost 5 years, it was a value that I copied from an example configuration. --Wilfredor (talk) 22:45, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
riley Yes I have been responsible, what I am saying is that it was not something done on purpose. I took yours warnings into account but I thought they were referring to pywikipediabot and not VFC which I have used for years without any inconvenience until today. I appreciate that you have reduced the blockage to 24 hours riley --Wilfredor (talk) 22:51, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
riley BTW, I was warned on my talk page while I was running VFC (This tool runs in full screen without updating the page, it is necessary to update the page to know that I have received a message in my talk page), The tool began to run a minute after the message you left in my talk page, but I had already begun to select the pages within the VFC tool, that is, I could not see the warning message until the tool finished --Wilfredor (talk) 00:08, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
I am a reasonable person, but the reason why I will not process this unblock request is because you are deflecting rather than taking ownership. "I thought they were referring to pywikipediabot" No, you were told the job was too large to complete without a bot flag. "I will stop using the tool until this problem with the tool is corrected" There is no problem with the tool, you set it up to work that way. "I was warned on my talk page while I was running VFC" The warning was issued 36 minutes prior to you making your first edit with the tool. ~riley (talk) 00:18, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
riley I honestly didn't see the warning on my discussion page and I didn't know that the variable I added so many years ago would cause that effect. I know that I had the absolute fault in which this happened, however it was not something premeditated, Sorry to be so insistent, but I usually use weekends to edit. This was my absolute fault next time I will be more careful, I am telling the truth and the only raison that why I can change the value from 50 to 10 in maxSimultaneousReq is because Im blocked, maybe it could fix the problem in my commons.js --Wilfredor (talk) 00:24, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
riley Anyway thanks for change the code on VFC too, I will continue tomorrow. Good night --Wilfredor (talk) 00:33, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
See above. What do you mean you will continue tomorrow? ~riley (talk) 06:32, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
Continue today talking with you here and editing on commons. Thanks for the unblock, this was just a misunderstanding on my part, of course, that doesn't absolve me of guilt. BTW, is it enough, or something else has to be done to make VFC work well with my account?--Wilfredor (talk) 18:05, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying. I am sorry if I was unclear earlier and caused a misunderstanding. The change to your common.js is enough. I continued where you left off with my bot, there is only a few that I missed left; see here. Should you consider to move your user categories (over 20,000 files), this would also be a task appropriate for a bot. ~riley (talk) 00:10, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
Dear riley, you were quite clear, I had a bad interpretation because I thought that pywikipedia acted on the server side and therefore it would have to regulate its use very well and for some reason I thought that the scripts could not cause problems but I did not have my bad configuration of commons.js. On the other hand, I started to do the process and I didn't see your message on the discussion page (because VFC run on full screen and with ajax) that was very clear, it was also something I had done many times in the past. Obviously this dirties the page of recent changes, I will follow your recommendation. BTW I can't edit the last file in your list --Wilfredor (talk) 15:20, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
  • What about this do you not understand? I specifically stated above "Should you consider to move your user categories (over 20,000 files), this would also be a task appropriate for a bot.", yet, you proceed to move over 11,000 files from your user categories on your main account. You stated above that "Obviously this dirties the page of recent changes, I will follow your recommendation,", but you proceed to do it anyways? Where is your integrity? If you proceed, I will block you again. ~riley (talk) 00:26, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
riley You told me that there would be no problems after changing the parameter in commons.js I was having a conversation with you here (4 days ago) to receive your help (I was even looking for you on IRC today), I know you must be busy, being active in commons on another situation, but you only appear to claim me about problems how If you are looking to scold me. Finally, the category with the most files (the one I thought you were referring to) was never moved --Wilfredor (talk) 00:40, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
I adjusted the paramater for one tool in your common.js; you are using another tool that it meant for small tasks. I was and am available on IRC if you ping me, however, I don't spend my day staring at the channel. I did not refer to a specific category, I clearly stated user categories which encompasses all your categories. It might as well have been that category (15,000 files), considering you moved 11,000 files.. How do I get it through your head that you shouldn't be editing at high edit speeds and completing bot tasks on your main account when there are literally bots sitting by ready to complete this task? With one edit, any admin can command User:CommonsDelinker to move a large category for you. Once again, you are making excuses. What changed between 4 days ago and now? You said you understand that editing like this floods recent changes (and watchlists, by the way), yet you proceed to make over 11,000 edits in short periods of time? I would not be scolding you if you demonstrated judgement and insight. ~riley (talk) 00:52, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
List me the clear rules and I will be able to respect them, I really am not understanding you. So VFC and cat-a-lot cannot be used because moving files from one category to another is bad? I am not understanding you, I do not know if there is an admin that speaks Spanish, Portuguese or French, maybe that can help. An example of clear rules would be: 1) You can make 500 maximum editions per day, 2) You can only make 400 editions with cat-a-lot per hour. A suggestion is very different from a rule --Wilfredor (talk) 01:04, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
Sorry for the delayed response - you didn't ping me so I assumed you didn't respond. Commons is very guidelines based and has many unwritten rules, whereas wikis like enwiki have a user essay, guideline and policy for everything. Commons is intentionally less restricted, but in moments like this, it makes it harder to reference a specific policy. Tools like VFC and cat-a-lot are awesome, but they are meant for small tasks. I.e. tag 200 images, move a category of 500 images, etc. Large tasks, which cause you to edit at extreme speeds, put a strain on the server (expensive on resources) and flood rc/watchlists. When we talk about edit speed, bots are encouraged to do 12 edits per minute. Seeing that small number, can you understand why such a large number (200/epm, 1,000/epm, etc) is unreasonable? The guideline you should consider when moving forward is to stop and think: will I strain the server? will I flood recent changes and watchlists to the point it is disruptive? If yes, stop and ask a bot operator to do it for you. If no, proceed while keeping in mind that if you move a 2,000 file category all at once, it is going to spit out at a high edit rate. Consider moving in reasonable batches. ~riley (talk) 19:23, 9 February 2020 (UTC)
~riley Why does mediawiki let me make so many edits per minute, shouldn't there be a technical limitation by IP in the number of requests to the server? --Wilfredor (talk) 01:50, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
Hey Wilfredor, I wish I could answer that question for you, I am not sure! I know it does on other wikis (like enwiki), but the limit got raised on Commons wiki per request - that wasn't for making high edit speeds, but high requests for loading pages and such (i think). There are ways to monitor server usage, overload, lag etc (thats how I noticed your edits) but there isn't the resources in place to enforce or slow down the use of those resources. Sometimes a dev catches on - I had my bot once run all of it's tasks at the same time, rather than staggered as planned, which resulted in 1,000+ epm like you did. A dev was paying attention and noticed within minutes, threatening to shut down my bot if I didn't do it myself. ~riley (talk) 01:56, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
User:~riley Thanks for taking your time to answer, I am convinced, I will vote for you --Wilfredor (talk) 23:48, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Africa 2020Edit

Contribute to Wiki Loves Africa and to how the world sees Africa!
Dear Wilfredor

In the past, you contributed to the Wiki Loves Africa competition. This February, you have another opportunity to create beautiful photographs on the theme of "transportation" that could change how the world understands people and culture in your part of Africa. As with previous years, there are also many exciting cash prizes.

Wiki Loves Africa is an annual public contest where people across Africa can contribute media (photographs, video and audio) about their environment to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Images from the competition have helped millions learn more about Africa and see Africa more clearly from an African perspective. Overall, nearly 5000 people like you have contributed to this photo contest, and contributed 18,000 images about Africa.

When does it take place?

The 2020 competition will start on the 15th of February 2020 and close on 31st March 2020.

What should we contribute?

Pictures ! audios ! videos ! The theme for the 2020 contest is... Africa on the Move ! This theme encompasses a host of approaches and is intentionally open to interpretation. It encourages the submission of visual representations of movement or transportation, whether by path, road, sea air, by self-propelled, animal or mechanical means, or the historical or contemporary structures that have been created to facilitate movement or the transportation of people, goods, or animals.

In addition to the value your photos contribute to understanding and African visibility, there are several prizes on offer. The international prizes are:

  • 1st prize: US$1000
  • 2nd prize: US$800
  • 3rd prize: US$500

Additional categories are:

  • Culturally specific or traditional representations of transport or structures that facilitate transportation : US$500
  • Prize for best quality video: $500

Each winner will also receive a pack of goodies (proposed: a hat "I edit Wikipedia from Africa", a branded battery, stickers). Additional prizes will be available in some countries.

For rules and information about how to participate, or to join the contest, click on Contribute to the Wiki Loves Africa photo contest.

Warmest,

Anthere, for the Wiki Loves Africa Team

  • 1er prix: US$1000
  • 2ème prix: US$800
  • 3ème prix: US$500

turtle editingEdit

Hi Wilfredo. Very many thanks for the work you did on my turtle FPC. I would love to know how you did it. I used a DNG Converter to convert Canon's .CR2 to .DNG. I use Photoshop CS6. I adjusted white balance, shadows and highlights in RAW, then saved as .jpg. I've never been an editing expert, but this week I then used the sharpening tool like a paintbrush (25% hardness 25% strength) on the turtle and then surface blur for the whole image (setting radius 4 and threshold 4). I then did a bit more blur on the background using blur tool. For the last year I have been using Unsharp Mask (amount 50% radius 1 threshold 0) and then noise reduction (strength 70%, preserve details 70%, colour NR 30%). Where am I going wrong please! [I love waterfalls and have been to Canaima and flown around Angel Falls - but in 1999 before I had nice camera gear) Charles (talk) 10:00, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

Dear Charles, First of all, Im not a expert and I apologize for having uploaded a version of your image, I took the boldness and seeing now in retrospect, I shouldn't have done it. Your work is very good, and I must accept that I am a fan of your photos. That said, we must be very careful in eliminating the noise of a photo, the noise of a photo is information and in eliminating it we are also removing valuable information. I always recommend using a version in which no noise or sharpness filter has been applied, and then uploading the version to which the modifications have been made, because that way you leave the path open for future correction using Better technique or better software. You will surprise yourself to see how things you used to do today are of poor quality and that is fine because we are improving as photographers and also the techniques and tools we use. If you want to know the mechanism that applies to your images, visit this topic. --Wilfredor (talk) 22:39, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
Thanks so much. I'd never heard of Topaz and have just downloaded a trial version to play with. I always keep the original RAW files and out-of-camera JPGs to play with. Charles (talk) 16:09, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
Charles Some Topaz Gigapixel AI results are simply magical, they are a little scary to rescue so many details. Some faces are poorly rendered but others are simply miraculous, I can't imagine the future that awaits us --Wilfredor (talk) 04:18, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
I'm going to buy the Sharpen AI, Noise AI and Gigapixel AI package. Even if they're no better than painstaking masking etc, they will save me boring editing time. But I agree they seem amazing, though some of the Youtube vidoes by third parties rave about pretty dodgy results. Unfortunately, something better will appear in 12 months! PS If you do focus-stacking, Helicon Soft is pretty good. Charles (talk) 11:00, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

Hello Wilfredor, thank you for your efforts on my FP candidate. How did you edit the picture? Topaz? I use NIK and DEFINE for sharpening and denoising but in this case I only used Lightroom tools. I didn't have the impression that the picture was missing something but I admit that it looks better. However, the file becomes considerably larger. To ask before is always more polite but what does politeness count nowadays? ;-) --Ermell (talk) 07:31, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

Comment - Unnecessarily large, and I can't view it at full size for more than a second before the image stops being visible. However, it looks to be of good quality at a reasonable size. Please note, though, that that is a drainage ditch and not remotely similar to a ravine. Or, if you meant "ravineI", I have no idea what that is. -- Ikan Kekek 09:11, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
Comment I wonder how this 17,920 × 14,332 pixels image was created. It does not look like a stiched panorama. If I view it at 100%, there are interesting structures and artefacts visible. Upscaled, maybe just by accident? --Aristeas 09:45, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
Thanks guys, I made a rollback about my changes to the smaller version. I tried to get more details using artificial intelligence, however, this resulted in a super massive image with a series of generated artifacts --Wilfredor 16:22, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

File:Johann Moritz Rugendas in Brazil.jpg for VICEdit

Hi, Wilfredor. I'd like to nominate File:Johann Moritz Rugendas in Brazil.jpg for VIC for Valuable Image under its title, but I'm a little confused because what you give as the English title is in French. What language is the original title in? I'd translate it into English as "Public Punishment in the praça Santa Ana", because we normally don't translate the names of streets and plazas. What do you think? -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:31, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

Dear Ikan Kekek , I added the correct description to a version that IMHO is better here --Wilfredor (talk) 11:54, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

Marie-Josephte Corriveau ?Edit

Bonjour Wilfredor,

Bien cordialement, BeatrixBelibaste (talk) 15:14, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

N. B. We can use English as well.

About a cheetah imageEdit

Hi! I was looking for images of the northwest African cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus hecki) when I found this beautiful upload of yours [4]. But I also found a very similar image [5] listed in the Category:Acinonyx jubatus soemmeringii in zoos which is another subspecies (northeast African cheetah). The original Flickr page doesn't identify the subspecies either. Can we be sure of the subspecies pictured in any way? Thanks :) Sainsf (talk) 05:37, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

—Preceding unsigned comment was added by 190.47.16.199 (talk) 14:28, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

ComentarioEdit

Hola.

This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Ca va bien aller.svg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Barnstar of Venezuela Free.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Study shows Wiki Love Africa recruitment makes a differenceEdit

Hello Wilfredor

We are writing because you have participated in the Wiki Loves Africa (WLA) photo competition in the past. Results have been published and winning pictures may be seen here !

This year WLA partnered with the research organization CAT Lab (previously CivilServant) to help us evaluate the effectiveness of one of our recruitment efforts. You may or may not have received a message on your user talk page encouraging you to participate again in this year's competition.

We are excited to share with you their study found our recruitment message was a success and may have resulted in as many as 2,000 additional contributed photos. We hope you agree this is great news for Africa and its representation across Wikimedia. You can read more about the study and the results in this blog post.

If you have any questions about the study, we encourage you to ask CAT Lab's research manager Juliakamin(cs).

Anthere, for the Wiki Loves Africa Team

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuffEdit

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

  • I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
  • Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
  • Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Hope to see you at the Zoom meeting in September!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 18:40, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi Wilfredor. With your update at File:CheHigh.jpg, you state it is a higher resolution copy from the original source, so does that mean you acquired it directly from the Museo Che Guevara? Or is there a URL you can link to? Thanks. Huntster (t @ c) 19:51, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

@Huntster: Oui Yes!, the source is File:Heroico1.jpg --Wilfredor (talk) 20:05, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
Sorry, how is that the source, when it is far lower resolution than CheHigh.jpg? I may not be understanding something. Huntster (t @ c) 21:14, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
@Huntster: Thanks for the question, the previous version of File:CheHigh.jpg was larger in size but did not have more true resolution and you could compute the Fourier transform of the picture and analyze it in frequency space. If the image was upsampled, higher frequencies will be missing in the transformed image. Note that the absence of the high frequencies could also mean that the original image did not contain enough detail, or it was not sharp in the first place. --Wilfredor (talk) 22:13, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
Ah, so it's Heroico1.jpg upsampled. Understood, thanks. Huntster (t @ c) 22:36, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

Reminder: User Group Meeting this SaturdayEdit

Dear Commons Photographers User Group member,

This is a quick reminder that our second virtual meeting will take place this Saturday, September 26. The agenda entails presentations about drone photography, about the story behind a featured picture, and about the future of LRMediaWiki. We'll also discuss photographers’ contacts with the Wikimedia Foundation and the election of representatives for our user group. You'll find information about all of this on the event page:

I'm also inviting you to share some information about yourself and your photography work with other members of the user group on our new membership list:

I hope you're well during these difficult times. All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 15:39, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files which can be used for any purpose, including:
  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload works you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.
