Featuring the dark sides of society

Hi The Photographer,

In continuation of our discussion regarding your attempts to illustrate the darker sides of society in a way such that the photos can become featured, this is a challenge, but a very interesting challenge. "Pretty" pictures are often the easiest to get featured, but there are notable exceptions. For me the best on Commons for this type of photography is Tomascastelazo from Mexico. If you have not already familiarized yourself with his featured peoples photography have a look at his gallery. He has a very good eye for portraying people in an unfortunate situation in a manner which both preserve the dignity of the portrayed people, while showing clearly, e.g., extreme poverty by using good timing and striking and simple compositions. A significant proportion of the photos in Featured pictures of Mexico are his. This may be the easiest ways to find his people FPs. I think we need much of of this kind of photography on Commons. I am terrible at it myself, too "shy" to "intrude" on other people I do not know in public, so I admire those who master this.

I am happy you got that camera donation from Dcoetzee. You have made many good contributions with that camera.

Do not underestimate your own capability! I think you have demonstrated several times already that you have a good eye for peoples photography, such as File:Boy Face from Venezuela.jpg.

@Slaunger: First of all, I wish to apologize for the delay, I was looking for the right way to answer without diverting the focus. Again, I want to join my appreciation for your high-value reviews and reviews of other users. The pictures I've taken of Venezuela have a value beyond the image itself. It is a country full of internal conflicts in Venezuela is currently Head through by great social difficulties, political persecution and if I was not out of the country there would be no way I write this message. The state has controlled everything and security has become an extra length of the Cuban government. The social and economic decline go hand in hand and this is evidenced in the photographic work I have done mainly in Maracaibo. I fled Venezuela for that reason so have many more high quality photos, mainly because seemingly normal photos of Venezuela suffer the stress of war photos with common findings clearly without that wow effect. Where I am now, Sao Paulo, I will be able to enjoy peace of mind for the compositions.

Thank you very much for recommending the work of @Tomascastelazo: is an excellent photographer and @Alvesgaspar: with one of my favorites. Many of them open to feedback, open to novice users guide others like me.

I have watched with concern as the section of FP has become a thirst for the amount of photos, competition for the greatest amount of FP possible, rather than competition for the thirst for knowledge, thirst for improvement, the sed to make art.

As I had mentioned earlier, this situational factor such as insecurity, poverty and limited access to certain photos. In FP is simply transparent because there is no objective rule that can be measured. --The Photographer (talk) 21:51, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

I am very sorry to hear that you have had to flee from Venezuela. From what you have written previously, and from your photos it appears to me to me that Venezuela is a country with many beautiful places and many resources. It is a pity to learn that these resources are managed so badly, and that life has become untolerable and dangerous for so many. I am glad that you are now safe. I read the article you linked from Washington Post. Thanks, it was very instructive.

Regarding FP, I actually do not think it works very different now from how it has always done as long as I remember at least. In my early days at commons back in 2007 I nominated a very non-pretty image for FP, which I found had a lot of value - for me at least. It had been an eye-opener to the irony of my own cultural values when I (and my two kids, then 7 and 9 years old) witnessed the incident leading to the image. It was not promoted, but from the discussion, I came to the conclusion that we needed another "appreciation" program for the value in images and after some time Commons:Valued images was launched. And thinking more about it, I do not think it would have been good editorial judgement if such a photo got promoted to FP status and some day would appear on the main page as POTD, as it could be a shocking experience for some, for instance kids, depending on cultural values.

If you actively look for this kind of material, it is an entirely different matter of course. So I am no longer as frustrated as I once were if truly valuable images, but perhaps not with the pretty wow, gets declined at FPC. The higher purpose is to make the material available, and properly describe it and categorize it, such that re-users looking for a specific not-FP-worthy theme can search for it and find it. Then the immediate appreciation comes in second. Like seeing after some years how images you have uploaded end up being used on wiki-pages, where you had never envisioned them to appear, such as in a quote from Ernest Hemingway.

Thank you very much for this comment. Right now I will be dedicated to finding a good job in this city. However, the possibilities are endless incredible take photos, so the first thing I do after finding a job is to take some amazing pictures. I have used lately selfishly to wikimedia commons, mainly to back up pictures and secondly, to improve my level using photographic criticism.

In another vein, with the passing of time, I have noticed that the philosophy of Commons to help Wikipedia or other projects, has been lost. They have made a business WMF and chapters is bureaucratic institutions have forgotten that this is not a company, it is an altruistic activity, people feel used when they do these things. --The Photographer (talk) 23:28, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

Kiwix Live CD background

Hi The Photographer,

I am Cristian, and I am trying to build a Kiwix Live CD. I have noticed that you are the creator of the Kiwix logo and I was wondering if you could be interested in helping me with a nice background for the Live CD featuring the logo and/or name of Kiwix. If you want you may also come up with a simple animation for plymouth (the splash screen that is show will loading the operative system, which is based on Ubuntu). Il ya longtemps que j'ai pensé à un live cd en utilisant les paquets de Linux minimal pour exécuter Kiwix. Avec une distribution Linux exclusivement Kiwix pourrait être utile pour les universités. Salut, voyez ici la version courante du Live CD. Il est vraiment alpha software et plusieurs améliorations sont nécessaires. Les images dont on a besoin maintenant sont:

1. fond d'écran, le directives de Ubuntu sur le sujet proposent une image d'au moins 2560 x 1600 pixels. Voyez ici pour des info supplémentaires
2. fond pour le bootloader GRUB, voyez ici (dans la section "Image creation and setup"), la résolution de base semble être 640x480 ou supérieure.
3. splash screen/plymouth, documentation ici

Hi The Photographer, thank your for reviewing my image. However, I feel that I should pass some additional informations concerning your comment about "strong distortion". The image was taken with a tiltshift lense to avoid strong distortions. I am aware, that most people in this forum are not used to see images taken with that kind of lense. Some perspective views are different to what you are used to see here after the usual untilting process. Also, I have to add that Schloss Fürstenau is not rectilinear everywhere. The only proof about verticals can be obtained by windows who cannot get opened if they are skewed. I admit, that there is a small incline on the right side; I can enhance that. La razón, según he leido en el mensaje, es "possible copyright violation". Yo tengo todos los derechos de copyright de las citadas imágenes. Cuando creé mi cuenta, envié el permiso de copyright y un email con differentes sitios en los que he compartido las imágenes junto a la licendia de distribución cediendo derechos de libre distribución. Personalmente he tomado las fotografías y he editado el contenido. Si necesita que reenvie estos documentos a wikimedia commons o cualquier otra información, puedes envirme un mensaje y así lo haré.

Antes de solicitar "undeletion" usando la plantilla de wikimedia, creo que lo correcto es ponerme en contacto con usted. Me gustaría pedirle que elimine el borrado y autorice de nuevo mi trabajo en Wikimedia.

Hola, Wilfredo, disculpa ante todo que te escriba en castellano, para hacerlo en inglés tendría que utilizar un bot traductor. Verás por la firma que no soy Tolijote. Tolijote se retiró hace tiempo y me encomendó el cuidado de sus trabajos y sus posibles 'descuidos' [1]. No acierto -algo habitual en mí, por otra parte- con la naturaleza del delito del montaje sobre el Teatro Independiente en España. Parte de un archivo ya existente en Commons... ¿Es posible que incurra en la misma torpeza que este otro mío: File:Antiga taquilla de Lluis Domènech i Montaner.jpg, sobre el que ya me dieron las pautas de enmienda? De ser esa la razón, ¿puedo yo intentar arreglarlo, aunque sea de Tolijote? ¿Y caso de que mi torpeza no lo consiga, me podrías ayudar a conseguirlo? Carta de Almostred

Estimado The Photographer:

Recientemente me puse en contacto porque había eliminado tres fotografías de mi cuenta (referencia 21. File:Toto Forever Poster.jpg . Yo soy el propietario del copyright). Ahora ha eliminado otra fotografía:

En esta ocasión la razón, según he leido en el mensaje, es que no he mandado un mensaje con páginas en las que la he compartido para demostrar que soy el propietario del copyright, algo que no es cierto. Como le comenté en mi mensaje previo, cuando creé mi cuenta, envié el permiso de copyright y un email con differentes sitios en los que comparto las imágenes junto a la licendia de distribución cediendo derechos de libre distribución. Personalmente he tomado las fotografías y he editado el contenido. No se si debo enviar este mensaje de nuevo o que puedo hacer, porque es muy frustrante que cada semana reciba mensajes de este tipo. Supongo que debería haber un centro de registro donde queden todos los mensajes en referencia a mis trabajos. No se si hay algún sitio a donde poder dirigirme para que se solucione definitivamente y que no vuelva a borrar MIS fotografías. Puedo reenviar el mensaje de nuevo, aunque no se si será distinto esta vez.

No entiendo porque es tan sencillo borrar imágenes y tan complicado que se escuche al interesado o que se registren los emails que se mandan sobre determinados temas. Es realmente frustrante. Entiendo que se trate de perseguir a quienes utilizan el trabajo de otros y violan sus derechos... pero no debemos pagar quienes somos inocentes por ellos. Esto se debería evitar. Me gustaría pedirle que elimine el borrado y autorice de nuevo mi trabajo en Wikimedia. Espero que sea posible y no tenga que enviar de nuevo información a una fuente anónima que perderá el email y volver a las mismas.

Gracias de todos modos por su tiempo. Siento descargar con usted mi frustración, pero es quien ha eliminado mi fotografía, aunque supongo que el responsable es el sistema.

Esto se realiza con el motivo de proteger al proyecto de problemas legales, las imagenes no son realmente eliminadas jamás, son simplemente ocultadas al público a la espera de su autorización, esto se hace para respetar los derechos de autor de cada persona incluyendo el suyo. Imagine que alguien se hace pasar por usted e intenta subir contenido a commons irrespetando su autoría, cómo se sentiría?. Y, no solamente el cómo se sentiría, muchos artístas podrían poner en jaque al proyecto con demandas legales. Una imagen bien documentada con el debido permiso jamás será ocultada. Por favor, usted puede dirigirse a este enlace y colocar básicamente un texto en donde usted afirme que es el autor. No tome este asunto de forma personal, espero ver nuevos trabajos suyos aquí!. Estou bem próximo a São Paulo (no ABC), e normalmente passo na cidade para treinar corrida e passear. Sim gostaria muito de combinarmos um passeio para fotografar, faço a sugestão do Parque Ibirapuera, podemos combinar do meio para o final da tarde para pegar melhor iluminação, as terças normalmente faço os treinos de corrida lá. Mas é apenas uma sugestão, se tiver algum tema (local) já planejado é só avisar que eu me planejo e combinamos.

Camuflaje

Hola Wilfredo, Nunca he intentado camuflajes tan sofisticados como los que tu mencionas, y la verdad no conozco a ningún otro fotógrafo que los use. En mi experiencia, los sentidos de los lobos son tan increíblemente agudos, que no va a funcionar. Yo he estado en situaciones en las que, incluso dentro de un hide, perfectamente camuflado, y totalmente inmóvil y silencioso, a 300 metros de un lobo, el lobo sabia, de alguna manera, que había algo raro... y se fue al poco rato. EN el caso de esta foto el lobo sabia perfectamente que estábamos allí pero el hambre era mas fuerte... De verdad, no creo que haya alternativas a usar lentes largas. Para otros muchos animales, como ciervos, pájaros... si. Felinos como los linces no les importa nada que haya gente hablando y fumando a 100 metros. Pero los lobos imposible. Saludos Arturo, antes que nada, me gustaría agradecerte por tomarte la molestia de responderme. Con respecto al tema de la fotografía de lobos, el lobo iberico ha sido mi principal pasión, sin embargo, he buscado diversos mecanismos para fotografiarlo de forma cercana, con un camuflaje principalmente de olor. He sido muy seguidor de fotografía de animales en su ambiente salvaje, sin embargo, el problema del lente indicado ha sido un impedimento, asi que en este punto solamente observo detenidamente los animales e intento retener lo más que puedo su imagen nitida en mi recuerdo. Debido al lente y camara con pocas capacidades, he perdido grandes oportunidades. Durante varios años, siempre, al llegar del trabajo, me internaba en la selva, me recostaba de un gran arbol y simplemente esperaba, a la media hora se empezaban a escuchar a los animales recobrar su vida normal, con un poco de suerte recuerdo haber fotografiado un ave extremadamente difícil de encontrar, también he estado cerca de grandes animales como el felino negro o pantera, sin embargo, de noche y sin una dslr es sencillamente imposible. El tipo de vegetación en Brasil es densa, esta situación impidió que grandes animales pudieran tener éxito, debido al poco espacio para la movilidad. También me he encontrado en mis expediciones con aves que no vuelan como el caso de File:Thrush_unknown.JPG que lo encontré robandome la poca comida que me quedaba a 4700 msnm en los Andes de Venezuela. Saludos amigo, espero que te encuentres bien. Tengo tiempo que no subo imágenes debido a que no he podido salir como antes por tiempo y cuestiones de mucha inseguridad actualmente. El titulo del mensaje se refiere a esto . Tanto esfuerzo por una llanta...jajaja. Pareces que no comes mucho y eso que alla se consigues de todo si estas aquí te mueres.

@Rjcastillo: Jajaja, coño eso fue hace 4 años, y si estaba exagerando para la foto. Lo que da risa es que alguien consiguió agregarla al artículo llave de cruz en Holandes, da mucha risa la vaina. Hablando de otra cosa, he estado al tanto de los problemas en Maracaibo y de como en tan corto tiempo la situación a empeorado mucho. First of all, thanks for taking me into account to review your photograph which is excellent, very good composition. However, I think that does not meet the requirements to be featured. I have some suspicions about if you used a tripod or not, jpg compress level. The picture has focus problems, chromatic aberration and noise at the bottom. I am sorry, this is only my humble personal opinion. You could try it again, you have an excellent camera, everything else can be learned. Commons:Photo challenge-translations

Hello The Photographer,
I just saw your thanks for my category edits in Venezuelan architecture and checked why I thought I knew that name - you're also active on Commons:Photo challenge, aren't you? As I noticed your babel boxes, I wanted to ask if you'd be interested in translating the commons challenges into Spanish? At the moment we translate the challenge themes and descriptions as well as the watchlist notice to Afrikaans, German, French, Hungarian, Russian, Swedish and Ukrainian (languages, where we have one or several users that can reliably help at the end of a month), but Spanish is a widely used language not included so far. I'm also asking Discasto, who translated the Photo challenge-main page, but it's normally better if there's more than one person involved - especially as we often try to do the translations in the last few days of the month (we haven't any December themes so far ;->).

Great! As we don't have the December themes so far, only the general description that doesn't change from month to month (except for the dates) can be translated at the moment - you can find it here (Photo challenge rules). We are using the Langswitch-Template for the translations, which means that you have to use es= and then write your translation. The months are translated automatically via another template (that's the strange thing with the {{{{{#ifexist:{{{1}}}|{{#time: F|1 {{{1}}} 2014|af}}|{{{1}}}}} {{{2}}}}}}). the themes are chosen - we have Bad weather and Household items in use for December. Though there could still be small changes in the challenge descriptions (I'm not sure if they are understandable & clear enough - if you have any ideas, feel free to help!), most of it should remain as it is. Beside the titles and descriptions on the challenge pages, the watchlist notices are prepared in HelenOnline's sandbox.
