Title
Bessie Parker farm, Leon, Iowa. Erosion reduced value of the farm
Description
  • Scope and content: The following is typed on the back of the photo. "The erosion in these field has reduced the value of the farm to the point where all but 40 acres have been taken over for taxes. The remaining 40 will be taken over sometime this year, unless, of course, the back taxes are paid. The farm was originally composed of 160 acres, selling in 1875 for $6.00 per acre. The land increased in value to a maximum in 1916 when the 40 acres sold for $4500. The present owner purchased this 40 acres for $47.00 per acre in 1928. The land changed hands twenty-two times during this period and was reduced from a 160 acre unit to a 40-acre unit and then increased to its present size of 63 acres. The taxes on the 40 acres for 1938 was $30.00."
