Description

Mike Doyen wrote and I edited:

The St. Louis Rookery

"Friends and fellow birders.

There is a six square block area in the Central West end around St. Louis University that is home to a growing heron/egret nest rookery.

201+ nests are all built in 84 different trees. The volunteers from St. Louis Audubon and other concerned citizens are monitoring 129 Little Blue heron nests, 40 Great Egret nests, 24 Black Crowned Night heron nests and 8 snowy egret nests.

Most birders agree that the record floods are the reason the heron/egrets have moved so far in land. This is also an area around the University with many old vacant buildings and apartments.

At present, it is guessed that many of the herons/egrets are feeding over at Forest Park, which is about two miles away as the crown (heron) flies. Heron will fly up to 25 miles or further for food. Seeing the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers are still at flood stage in a around St. Louis tells us that any open water anywhere will be visited by herons/egrets is search of food.

There are many articles being written about the volunteers and what they are doing to monitor the growing city rookery. They are also in the process of printing a flier to educate the thousands of people in the area - Citizen Science at its best.

On behalf of backyard birders everywhere, I want to thank all the volunteers that are working overtime to keep the rookery safe, while monitoring all sites and the growing number of nests."
