DescriptionBluenose II, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.jpg |
The original Bluenose was a Nova Scotian racing/fishing schooner built by Smith and Rhuland in Lunenburg in 1921. While it served primarily as a fishing vessel, it competed regularly in races for the International Fisherman's Cup, winning against all challengers. After World War II, the now-obsolete Bluenose was sold to work as a freighter in the West Indies, where it foundered on a Haitian reef in 1946. The Bluenose has appeared on three Canadian stamps (in 1929, 1982, and 1999) and is on the Canadian dime and the current Nova Scotian license plate. The Bluenose II is a working replica of the famous Bluenose, built to the original specifications by many of the same workers in 1963. While Bluenose II does not race (in honor of its predecessor), it does regularly sail the Nova Scotian coast, serving as a reminder of the province's maritime heritage. |
