Boletus subvelutipes group Image location: Washington Crossing State Park, Mercer Co., New Jersey, USA Two pairs of fruiting bodies growing two feet apart from each other on a steep slope between a dirt trail and the creek. The nearby trees were all hardwoods: red and white oaks and beech. First I thought these were B. subvelutipes (based on cap colors); however, I couldn’t see any red or yellow hairs on stipe bases and the stipe coloration had little red in it. Now I am thinking these are closer to obs 243052, despite the notable difference in cap colors, as there was a decent amount of yellow pigment in the cap of one of the fbs from the second pair (see pic). The chemical tests were also in excellent agreement with those of the aforementioned obsie: KOH = maroon on cap surface; deep rusty orange on context NH3 = mahogany to dark brown on cap surface; medium amber brown on context FeSO4 = dark gray on cap surface; changed the bluing on context to yellow; blotted context was grayish-yellow.
