English: AUTOMATIC LEVEL CROSSING GATES TO BE INSTALLED SOON

Automatic American style railway level crossing gates will be in stalled In Brisbane within a few months. Trans port authorities claim that the new type of half boom gate is five times safer than the usual railway crossing sign.

The first electrically operated safety device will be installed at the Wilston Road level crossing next to Newmarket Station and will replace manually-operated gates.

The Transport Minister (Mr. J. R. Duggan) said to-night that telnders for the first unit would be called immediately. The estimated cost for one was at least £2000. The new type of safety gate consisted of booms extending slightly more than half way across the left hand side of the level crossing, one on each side of the railway line.
