Description

1963 Jaguar E-Type Series I Coupe

The E-type was introduced in March 1961. Jaguar's international reputation enabled it to choose the Geneva Motor Show for the launch, where the car caused a sensation. Here was a beautiful sports car with the promise of a top speed of 150mph, yet available at a very reasonable price of just over £2000.

Penned by aerodynamicist, Malcolm Sayer, in design the E-type clearly followed on from the D-type racing car but it was meant to be a super-fast, sleek, road-going sports car. Sir William Lyons, Jaguar's boss, insisted there should be fixed coupe, so this was developed by Bob Blake alongside the roadster model.

At the heart of the E-type was a steel monocoque centre section with a front tubular frame. The unique independent rear suspension was new but the 3.8 litre version of the SK engine and four wheel disc brakes were carried over from previous models.

In October 1964 the styling was re-touched and a 4.2 litre engine added. A third body style, the 2+2 seater coupe, emerged in 1966. The series II model was launched in 1969, with further styling changes such as the rear lights and bumper, together with improved cooling and interior. It was replaced by the series III range in 1971, which was aimed much more at the US market. From 1961 to 1975, over 70,000 E-types were built.
