Description

1971 Reliant Scimitar GTE

The Reliant company has perhaps become most well known for its Regal and Robin three-wheel cars. Yet Reliant also had a successful line in sports cars, with the more traditional four wheel layout. In 1964 Reliant replaced their Sabre sports car with a stylish new GT car, designed by Ogle. The Scimitar GT was a glass-fibre bodied 2+2 coupe, powered by the Ford Zephyr straight six engine. By the end of the sixties, Reliant were experimenting with a new concept; the sports estate.

The trendsetting Scimitar GTE was introduced in 1968 – a sports touring estate car, with room for four adults and their luggage. This concept was later to be copied by others, such as Volvo and Lancia. Like the GT, the GTE used a strong steel chassis with a glass-fibre body, designed again by Ogle. The engine was now Ford's 'Essex' V6 3 litre. In 1971 the GTE was revised with an upgraded interior and increased power and a new, larger model, was launched in 1976.

The Scimitar GTE attracted some well-known owners, most notably HRH Princess Anne, who had a number of examples. Originally silver, this particular GTE was repainted in Reliant 'April Yellow No.2' early in its life.
