Kanalküste 15.5.44 Ein halbes Dutzend Tiger-Kommandanten. Sechs Kommandanten aus einer Kompanie der "SS-Panzer...Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler" vernicheten mit ihren Tigern nahezu 3 kampfstarke Panzerbrigaden. Der Kompaniechef - leuchtendes Vorbild. Obersturmführer Michael Wittmann steht mit seinen 117 Panzerabschüssen nicht nur an der Spitze seiner Kompanie, sonder ist einer der erfolgreichsten Panzerkommandanten überhaupt. Ausser ihm gingen noch weitere fünf Kommandanten aus seiner Kompanie hervor, die wegen besonderer Tapferkeit vor dem Feind mit dem Ritterkreuz ausgezeichnet wurden. Schon das allein spricht für den Geist, der in dieser Kompanie herrscht. Innerhalb von 14 Tagen wurde Obersturmführer Wittmann mit dem Ritterkreuz und dem Eichenlaub ausgezeichnet, vernichtete er doch in dieser Zeit weitere 28 russische Panzer, darunter grösstenteils T 34. Wenn man den Kompaniechef aus Vogelthal in der Oberpfalz, der mit seinen 30 Jahren kaum älter ist als die meisten seiner Kommandanten, im Gespräch mit seinen Männern beobachtet, fühlt man unwillkürlich die aus vielen Kämpfen geborene Kameradschaft heraus, die nötig ist, um aus Einzelkämpfern ein erfolgreiches Ganzes zu schaffen.
