On a return trip from Canmore, Alberta recently, Lorraine & I were looking for photographic opportunities. We came around a bend on Hwy 1A near Exshaw when we saw this train at a standstill on the main line. He was farther back than depicted here (closer to the mine in the background). Lorraine was driving; we spotted this turn-off and she proceeded to get closer to take some pictures. I got out of the car to walk down the track we were on while Lorraine stayed in the Jeep.

I had not taken but a few snaps when there was this honk that startled us. It came from a Canadian Pacific half-ton that had snuck up behind us. I thought the gig was up because perhaps we were trespassing. An employee got out of the passenger side and started walking towards me. I apologized, but he wasn't interested. Instead he used his mobile radio to call the freight to notify where he was. It turns out he was another engineer or conductor, and was getting aboard for this trip.

The other engineer acknowledged his call and started moving the train toward us. That's where this image comes into play. Eventually, it was right alongside us, and picking up the employee. Lorraine got better shots of that than me. I got a wave from the driver as they continued on their way.
