Fulfilling the War and Navy Peperf-ments' request thkt Oakland raise $2Q.00t as its share of a national fund to care for the enlisted me a of the army and nary when they visited cities surrounding camps and posts, the War-Camp , Community Service began a rapid acflon drive this morning exjfccttiaf. to complete Its work with arTover-subscrlption by Saturday ntght. Before the opening, the committee la charge found itself several hundred dollar to the good in various sums received through the mails yesterday and in pledges made at th dinner to captain and did workers at the Hotel Oakland last evening. "This Is n time for. American-Ism, " was the way it was Vh by, the Kev. Charles L. Klosa of Plymouth church. "There must be no more German Americana, Swedish Americana, lrlah-Auier.cans or anything else but Just Americans. These are th days that try men's souls; we hate oppression and we hat tyranny but we hate them more than w do ar. Such movements as this mean a great wave of patriotism which will result after the war In casts and cant and snobbery based upon wealth and social position being swept aside and in its plac will come a socialisation ef th world, a socialization of opportunity and of property." OTHER SPEAKERS. Other speakers who pledged themselves and the organ nations they represented to hard work in raising th monay called for were: Oeorge a. Meredith, president of the Rotary Club; U C. Frasler of the Oakland Pen of Lions; William B. Bur-beck, H. C. CapwelL president of the Chamber of Commerce; Max Horwlnski ef th Elks; L. W. Cummings of th Moose; S. Samuels, of th Odd Fellows; (Jeortte Hatch, of the Merchants' Exchange, Louis Aber, of Aahme Temple, Mystic Shrine; and Perry Olsen. acting general secretary of the V. M. C. A. Joseph N. Burroughs, chairman of the War-Camp Community Service, presided and made a vigorous talk lu outlining the program for the workers. Following are the facts relating to the War-Camp Community Service fund that the committee is anxious that every one should be familiar with: Amount S3 per soldier per year. What It will do Mske th soldiers and sailors healthier agid happier; protect them against the moral hazards of th city; make them mor efficient In combat. SEND GOOD FORCE. The ultimate purpose To send forth a wonderful American force on th greatest crusade of all time, so filled with the Invincible American spirit. Inspired by contact with the American people that the result will Ibe certain victory. Officers of the organization are: Joseph N. Burroughs, chairman; Alexander T. Stewart, secretary; Arthur W. Moore, assistant cashier of the Oakland Bank of Savings, treasurer. The headquarters at 1444 Broadway are In cbatgs of Joseph N. Burroughs, assisted by Perry Olsen, acting general secretary of the Y. M. C. A.; Norman P. Ellis and William B. Burbeck. Checks may be made payable to Arthur W. Moore and mailed to the general headquarters.
