In 1919 werd een comité opgericht voor de oprichting van een gedenkteken ter herdenking van de mannen van Canterbury die in de Grote Oorlog omkwamen. Ze besloten om een kruis te bouwen in de Butter Market, net buiten de Christ Church Gate van de kathedraal. De gekozen architect was Beresford Pite. Het comité besloot het gedenkteken te onthullen zonder de namen van de gesneuvelden omdat het identificeren van de soldaten zo lang duurde. De onthulling had plaats op 10 oktober 1921 door veldmaarschalk Haig, het gedenkteken werd gewijd door de aartsbisschop van Canterbury, Randall Davidson. Het duurde tot het volgende jaar voordat de tabletten definitief werden aangebracht. De verschillende strijdkrachten worden vertegenwoordigd door de figuren die rond het gedenkteken zijn uitgehouwen en voorzien zijn van wapenschilden: Een piloot draagt het wapen van Kent, een matroos het wapen van de aartsbisschop van de kathedraal en een soldaat het wapen van de Zwarte Prins. Aan de voorzijde van het gedenkteken draagt Sint-Joris de wapens van de stad Canterbury. De inscriptie, die rond het gedenkteken loopt, luidt: 'Opgedragen aan de geëerde nagedachtenis van de mannen van Canterbury die in de Grote Oorlog van 1914-1919 zijn omgekomen'. The committee decided to unveil the memorial without the names of the fallen, to be added later, inscribed on tablets of bronze, because identifying the soldiers took so long. The unveiling was performed on 10 October 1921 by Field Marshal the Earl Haig, with the memorial dedicated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Randall Davidson. It was not until the following year that the tablets were finally fixed. The various armed forces are represented by the figures carved around the memorial, bearing coats of arms: An airman bears the arms of Kent, a sailor the Archbishop of Cathedral’s arms and a soldier the Black Prince’s arms. At the front of the memorial, Saint George bears the arms of the City of Canterbury. The inscription, which runs around the memorial, reads ‘Dedicated to the honoured memory of the men of Canterbury who fell in the Great War 1914–1919’. |
