François Lamorre est né le 20 août 1876 à Versailles. Il s’engage comme volontaire à 18 ans au 26e régiment d’infanterie et engage une carrière militaire dans les chasseurs. Il est nommé capitaine en mars 1914 au 24e bataillon de chasseurs alpins. Lors de la bataille des frontières, il est blessé le 20 août 1914 en Lorraine. Après une courte convalescence, il rejoint en mars 1915 le 115e bataillon de chasseurs alpins et participe aux combats du Reichackerkopf. Blessé pour la seconde fois en mars 1915 à Metzeral, il est nommé chevalier de la légion d’honneur pour faits de guerre. François Lamorre est décoré le 11 janvier 1916 au Saut des Cuves par le président Poincaré. Affecté en avril 1916 à la 46e division de chasseurs, il passe ensuite au 1er corps d’armée avec lequel il participe aux offensives de la Somme en 1916, du Chemin des Dames et de Belgique en 1917, de l’Aisne en juin 1918. Chef de la section topographique, il est chargé d'examiner des centaines de photographies prises par les reconnaissances aériennes. Perdant peu à peu la vue, suite à une dégénérescence maculaire, il demande à reprendre du service sur le terrain. Il est nommé chef de bataillon au 33e régiment d’infanterie à la tête duquel il est cité à l’ordre de l’armée pour avoir tenu tête à l’ennemi, avant d’être fait prisonnier, le 15 juillet 1918.
