English: These four men were part of the Car Barn Bandits, a gang which terrorized Chicago in the summer and autumn of 1903. They were subsequently captured, tried, convicted, and sentenced to death.
On April 22, 1904, three of the Bandits -- Harvey Van Dine, Gustav Marx, and Peter Neidermeier -- were hanged. A fourth, Emil Roeske, was sentenced to life in prison; by 1916, Roeske (described as "of low mentality") was declared insane. |
