Précisions sur la représentation Léopold Ollier (1830-1900). Né aux Vans (Ardèche) le 2 décembre 1830 ; décédé subitement à Lyon le 25 novembre 1900. Interne des Hôpitaux de Lyon (1851). Docteur en Médecine de Montpellier (1856). Il s'installe à Lyon en 1857 et commence des recherches sur l'ostéogénèse réparatrice. Chirurgien Major de l’Hôtel-Dieu (1860). Il devient chirurgien titulaire en 1868 et prône un nouveau courant (à la suite des recherches sur les maladies articulaires d'Amédée Bonnet) : les résections des articulations au lieu des amputations. Professeur de clinique chirurgicale (1877-1900) à la fondation de la faculté mixte de Médecine et de Pharmacie. Publication du Traité des Résections (1885-1899). Correspondant (1874) puis associé national de l’Académie de Médecine (1883). Correspondant (1874) puis Membre associé de l’Institut, Académie des Sciences (1885). Président du Congrès français de chirurgie (Paris 1886 et Lyon 1894). Membre d’honneur de la société de chirurgie de Paris (1887). Président du Congrès international de chirurgie, Berlin 1890. Commandeur de la Légion d’honneur (1894). Membre de l’Académie des Sciences, Belles Lettres et Arts de Lyon (1876), dont il sera deux fois Président en 1896 et 1900. Une médaille est frappée en son honneur en 1904 en même temps qu’on lui élève une statue à Lyon sur la place portant son nom. Une statue est élevée aux Vans en 1905, sa ville natale. Ses deux sculptures son l’oeuvre de son ami le sculpteur A. Boucher. Ollier étudia toute sa vie la chirurgie osseuse et articulaire à laquelle il fit faire de très grands progrès. Il est l'inventeur des greffes cutanées libres. Il est considéré comme le père de la chirurgie expérimentale et le créateur de la chirurgie ostéo-articulaire.
