Porth Hellick Down, St. Mary's, Isles of Scilly. PORTH HELLICK DOWN Now the sea is obscured by a bank of mist; wisps of it are whirled across the island. This is the gaunt and crusted necropolis of Ennor, the stones laid with a stark simplicity. The furze has been cleared. It is piled in an ashen dome beside a tomb, the gnarled twigs clawing skywards. The wind buffets, plovers worry aloud, blackberries ripen, rot between the stones. It is not hard to believe: once men dreamt of coming here without returning. Source material: Porth Hellick down has one large and imposing tomb over twelve metres in diameter, which has been restored. However, there are several other tombs and mounds, in varying states of ruin, spread out across the down to the south and east of the main tomb. The largest tomb dates from the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age, but appears to have been re-used in the late Bronze Age, since pottery from this period was found there during excavations in 1899. See Craig Weatherhill, op.cit., p. 129. Poem by Giles Watson, 2004. |
