Los chinelos, con mantos y túnicas de vivos colores, llevan a cabo una especie de teatro de la época de la colonia que se denomina “El pecado” y consiste en la lucha que se libra entre San Miguel Arcángel y Lucifer. Otra versión de su origen cercana al cerro del Tepozteco, está asociada a la escandalosa conducta que asumieron los conquistadores en Tlayacapan, quienes gustaban de comer y beber exageradamente antes de la fiesta y abstinencia de cuaresma. Se celebraba la fiesta de disfraces entre las clases adineradas de la colonia, no permitiéndose el acceso a esta celebración al pueblo en general. Para la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, por 1870, los españoles se reunían antes de la cuaresma en elegantes bailes que estaban reservados únicamente para los peninsulares. Cansados de verse excluidos de las fiestas de Carnaval, un grupo de jóvenes nativos del lugar, organizaron una cuadrilla, se disfrazaron con ropa vieja tapándose la cara con pedazos de manta y empezaron a gritar, a chiflar y a brincar por las calles del pueblo, burlándose de los españoles, se les llamó huehuenchis, palabra que significa “viejos feos” o “gente que se viste con ropa vieja”. Este modo de celebrar entre ellos tuvo gran éxito, tanto que al año siguiente se organizó de nueva cuenta. Para representar a los españoles se les añadieron barbas a las máscaras. Al año 1872 salieron nuevamente jóvenes a la calle, acompañados de una banda de música de viento, disfrazados con una mascara que tenía barba pronunciada y bigotes exagerados, así como ojos azules, en un interés por ridiculizar al español y en venganza por las humillaciones que habían recibido. A medida que se hacía más popular la fiesta se ritualizaba y el personaje evolucionaba gradualmente. Se convirtió en una manera sutil y divertida de protestar, la gente entonces decidió llevar a cabo su propia celebración, corno era usual, mezclando rituales ancestrales con los de la nueva cultura importada, resultando eventos pagano-religiosos según los señores. |
