DescriptionChinese room QE2 132.jpg |
English: A CHINESE DRAWING-ROOM AT SELANGOR. The Chinese, who, owing to bad government and extortion, can seldom accumulate wealth in their own country, soon become rich under the protection of British law. What they earn is their own, and their prodigious industry and skill in business enable them to earn money rapidly and easily. We here see one example of how the money is expdended by a well-to-do Chinaman living in a State under British protection. It cannot be said that the compromise between Eastern and Western tastes has been very happily effected, but, to tell the truth, the incongruity is no greater than appears in many a Western drawing-room, which the fair occupants have crammed full of Chinese and Japanese curios, assorting but ill with the solid and unpicturesque furniture of the ordinary British upholsterer. |
