Description
English: Clipsham Yew Tree Avenue — a topiary avenue in Rutland, England.
  • The avenue (landscape allée) stretches for 500 metres (1,600 ft), with ~150 shaped yew trees—Taxus baccata topiary lining the carriage drive to Clipsham Hall, a large 18C mansion set in parkland.
  • Many of the trees are over 200 years old. The trees have been trimmed into various shapes depicting birds and animals on the tops and various designs in relief on the sides, started by Amos Alexander in 1870, whilst living at the gatehouse.
  • The Forestry commission took over the avenue in 1955 and has continued with the tradition.
