Het bijschrijft verwijst impliciet naar sociale onrust: waarschijnlijk heeft deze foto te maken met gebeurtenissen uit 1920. De krant Het Nieuws van den Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië berichtte op 26 mei 1920 over een staking op de suikerfabriek Kalibagor, die op de vijftiende van die maand was uitgebroken. De stakingen waren uitgebroken tijdens de 'maaltijd', de periode waarin het suikerriet wodt geoogst en het in de fabriek wordt vermalen en verwerkt. Een suikerfabriek draait dan op volle toeren. Het ging de stakers om toekenning van hun looneisen en erkenning van hun organisatie, de PFB (Personeel Fabriek Bond). De Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant (NRC) meldde op 17 juli 1920 dat de stakingen gebroken waren met behulp van Chinezen uit Cheribon (Cirebon), al verwachtte men eerdaags nieuwe stakingen.
