Description

The Popa Monastery was founded in 1606 by Alonso García Paredes an Augustinian Recollet Priest. It was not inhabited by the Augustinian friars since 1822 until 1963. It has always been, The Candelaria Virgin Sanctuary, Patroness of Cartagena, and Her image is worshipped by the People of God in the Chapel of the Monastery.

The Pope John Paul II in his Apostolic Visit to Cartagena, canonically crowned the image of our Lady of La Candelaria, the 6th of July of 1986 [onventodelapopa.com]
