Description
English: Locomotive 144, built by the CP in Montreal in March 1886, is Canada’s oldest surviving steam locomotive and is similar to the locomotive that hauled the first transcontinental train from Montreal to Port Moody, British Columbia, on July 4, 1886. Originally numbered 351, it was renumbered 144 in 1912. It was rebuilt in 1914 at the Angus Shops and fitted with a steel cab, a superheater, air brakes, etc. After its rebuild, it was primarily intended for branch line service, on which it was used until 1959.

The 4-4-0 American type was very popular until the advent of the more powerful and more versatile 4-6-0 Ten-Wheeler. CPR 144 served regularly until December 1959, when it was withdrawn after 73 years of service. During its last years, it was used in New Brunswick, where one bridge did not have the capacity to carry heavier motive power.

Another CP built locomotive of similar vintage is also preserved in Canada. CPR 29, built in 1887, is on loan from the CRHA to the Canadian Pacific Railway for display in front of their headquarters in Calgary Alberta.
