Summary
editDescriptionDe Biesbosch (zie comment) (35181968682).jpg |
Once upon a time, the Dutch Biesbosch was an area of swamp fields with reeds and willows narrated to the tidal currents of ebb and flood. On the vagaries of storm and flooding. Early last century, the area is being deployed for agriculture. How this has happened is a too long story to tell. But it's not nice. The times were different, but even before that time it was asocratic and mean for the workmen. This is not denied by the council. Unsuitable and unskilled unemployed people must, in the event of a penalty, withdraw their benefits, only armed with a shovel, cultivate the land there. Many were not able to do this extremely hard work. They produced a lot of farmland for the city Dordrecht. Because of his political function, Mr. Theodoor Stoop is partly responsible for the project caused by the crisis of the 30's. He, a quiet and in general a comfortable practitioner and surgeon, has done a lot of good work for the citizens in Dordrecht. Mr. Th. Stoop got a monument in the Biesbosch. The Stoop-bank (-couch) it is called. A resting place with benches, walled with bricks, on a terp. This is the place (in the picture, now the Noorderelsweg) where the Stoopbank still is. The Stoopbank was delivered in 1930. Although I'm not the youngest anymore, this picture is certainly not mine but in support of imaging the area. |
