En Extremadura, escondido entre Villuercas y Altamiras, se encuentra el Real Monasterio de Santa María de Guadalupe Un conjunto monástico que se inicia en el siglo XIV. Fueron monjes de la Orden de los Jerónimos los primeros en habitarlo. Vivieron en esta cartuja cerca de cuatro siglos, que fue además el tiempo que duraron las diversas ampliaciones y reformas que tuvieron lugar en el mismo. En el año 1908 monjes franciscanos vuelven a dar vida a este monasterio, teniendo como cometido restaurar las construcciones y obras de arte de este maravilloso monumento. Del Monasterio de Guadalupe destacan en la fachada principal de la iglesia sus magníficas e increibles puertas Las portadas de acceso estan formadas por arcos apuntados abocinados que apoyan en columnas con capiteles de hojarasca. Las hojas que cierran las puertas estan realizadas en el siglo XV y trabajadas en bronce repujado con relieves, abribuido el trabajo a Paolo de Colonna, con figuras de gran tamaño y escenas alusivas a la vida de la Virgen y del Nuevo Testamento. La Unesco inscribió el Monasterio de Guadalupe en la lista del Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1993 Este monasterio posee un interés excepcional porque ilustra cuatro siglos de arquitectura religiosa española y recuerda los dos acontecimientos históricos trascendentales de 1492: el final de la reconquista en la Península Ibérica por los Reyes Católicos y la llegada de Cristóbal Colón a América. La célebre estatua de la Virgen de Guadalupe se convirtió en un poderoso símbolo de la cristianización de gran parte del Nuevo Mundo |
