Description
English: View north across the platform at the former Stanwell Park railway station, after an accident involving the collision of a passenger and cargo goods train on the platform itself. Photographed on 18 January 1907, likely by then-Sydney accident train leader William Ellis, the scene involved a number of cargo carts crushed up against its locomotive, by the locomotive of the northbound passenger train headed towards Sydney Central. Passengers alight the passenger train in the aftermath, as they await a cleanup of the site to restart their journey. Accidents such as the one depicted in this photograph, were common on the original 1889 alignment of the South Coast railway line, New South Wales, due to its steep gradients. From 1915 to 1920, a new alignment making use of a more flat gradient was constructed to replace it. Stanwell Park railway station was closed and a replacement station was opened higher up in the town's hillside.
