Detached Kitchen at Whitney Plantation, Louisiana

Summary

edit
Description
English: The detatched kitchen— thought to be the oldest in the state — preserved at Whitney Plantation, one of several surviving antebellum plantation museums — but this one with a fascinating twist — along the "River Road" [the Mississippi River] near near the tiny town of Wallace in St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana (the state calls its counties "parishes"). The twist is that while Whitney, like the other sprawling plantations, has a grand manor home, it is not open or included in tours. The emphasis is entirely upon the lives, dwellings, and workplaces of slaves who toiled at the sugarcane plantation.
