Scheerboom Plaats vervaardiging: Nederland Datering: ca. 1826 Fysieke kenmerken: blaas, hout en touw Materiaal: blaas hout touw Afmetingen: l 44 cm. × b 17 cm. (max.) Toelichting Deze ballon was voor twee gebruiken bedoeld. Indien gebruikt als 'ballon van kondschap' werd een opgerold bericht aan de ballon bevestigd, die, drijvend op het water en gebruik makend van de wind, communicatie over tamelijk grote afstand tot stand kon brengen. Met vijftig of honderd opgeblazen blazen samengebonden in een grote zak waaraan een touw werd vastgemaakt, verkreeg men een drijfzak voor het tot stand brengen van kontakt tussen een op lager wal gestrand schip in nood en de wal. Overboord gegooid zou de zak aan wal geblazen worden, waar mensen hem opvingen en een kabel aan het touw vastgemaakt aanhaalden. De ballonnen en andere uitvindingen van Scheerboom werden op 10, 11 en 13 juni 1826 te Scheveningen met succes beproefd.
