Description Drone-fly (Eristalis tenax), 10 April 2013. This was photographed along the roadside verge of Ashtree Woods on Six Hills Way in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, which is the second site where I am surveying butterflies for Stevenage Borough Council/Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust. I chose to go today because on my way home from town earlier, although temperatures were forecast at about 8-9°C, I saw two butterflies (a Brimstone and what I think was a Red Admiral) and it felt warmer. During the survey, the wind was calm and it was pretty sunny too. It only took about 15 minutes to walk the transect, and I wasn't seeing any butterflies. So I photographed this hoverfly on a Dandelion. Then at the very end of the transect, I spotted a Comma, which was very pleasing as I had got my first result! But not a photo of it. I also didn't photograph the site, but may do next time.
