DescriptionEads Bridge in St. Louis.jpg | Eads Bridge in St. Louis, a national landmark (1874). After the Civil War, St. Louis began a sharp economic decline. Once a critical stop for commerce travelling on the Mississippi River, St. Louis became less relevant as trains became the main method of cargo transport. It became critical to the future of the town to bridge the Mississippi and become a gateway to the West. Designed by James B. Eads, the Eads Bridge was the longest arch bridge in the world when it was completed in 1874. Its steel cantilever design influenced bridge design for decades. The Gateway Arch was later based on this design. | ||
