English: Additional File 2 A Quick Time movie file demonstrating the change in alveolar mechanics (the dynamic change in alveolar size and shape with tidal ventilation) that occur with acute lung injury. The alveoli in this movie were injured by Tween 20 instillation. Tween 20 deactivates pulmonary surfactant and has been used as model of ARDS for several decades. Notice that alveoli are now very unstable, with some alveoli collapsing totally during expiration and than re-expanding during inhalation. |
