Description
English: Ellen Abel-Musgrave (1908–1988) was born in Clifton near Bristol in England. She served as a gymnastics teacher after she completed her training at Dora Menzler school in Leipzig and Wustrow in 1929. In 1929/30 she was part of the staff of progressive Schule am Meer (= School by the Sea) on the East-Frisian island Juist in Prussia. The school's principal was Martin Luserke (1880–1968). Ellen Abel-Musgrave was the older sister of internationally renowned economist Richard Abel Musgrave (1910–2007) and the daughter of writer and translator Curt Abel-Musgrave (1860–1938).
Deutsch: Ellen Abel-Musgrave (1908–1988) wurde in Clifton geboren, einem Vorort von Bristol in England. Sie war das älteste Kind des Chemikers, Mediziners, Pädagogen, Journalisten, Autors und Übersetzers Curt Abel-Musgrave (1860–1938) und dessen Ehefrau Charlotte (1871–1923), geborene Prüfer. Ihr jüngerer Bruder war der in Königstein im Taunus geborene Richard Abel-Musgrave (1910–2007), der sich später als Ökonom internationales Renommée erwarb. Nach der am Taunusinstitut in Königstein im Taunus erworbenen Lyceumreife (Mittlere Reife) besuchte sie die Wirtschaftliche Frauenschule in Weilbach bei Flörsheim am Main. Im Anschluss bildete sie sich in Weimar am Institut der Frau Geheimer Staatsrat Guyet in Literatur und Kunst weiter. Ab 1927 besuchte sie in Leipzig und im Ostseebad Wustrow die Dora Menzler-Schule für Gymnastik, gestaltete Bewegung und Musikerziehung, die auf eine Ausbildung in naturistischer Gymnastik und Ausdruckstanz fokussierte. 1929 erhielt Ellen Abel-Musgrave ihr Diplom als staatlich geprüfte Gymnastiklehrerin und wirkte von 1929 bis 1930 an der Schule am Meer auf Juist, wo sie 1930 Mitglied der S.a.M.-Außengemeinde wurde. Sie verließ die S.a.M. vorzeitig, um 1931 ihrem Vater Curt in die Niederlande zu folgen, wo sie in Den Haag und Scheveningen Damen und Kinder in Gymnastikkursen unterrichtete. Während der NS-Zeit durfte Ellen aufgrund ihrer teils jüdischen Abstammung ihren Lehrerberuf in Deutschland nicht ausüben. Erst in den frühen 1960er Jahren konnte sie daran in Hamburg wieder beruflich anknüpfen.
