English: International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering. In an effort to alleviate the destructive effects of earthquakes, the United Nations Development Programme, with UNESCO acting as executing Agency, is assisting the Japanese Government in the expansion of the International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering. The purpose of this project is to further develop the training programme for specialists as well as the advisory services offered to developing countries located in the seismic zones of the world. nIn order to test a structural design theory, tests are made on actual housing structures in the Large Size Structures Testing Laboratory. Quasi-static seismic forces are created by means of these bilaterally operative oil jacks.
