Summary edit

Description
English: Greenville, NC, September 27, 1999 -- John Chick with US Cellular's primary cellular switching site for the Northeastern corner of North Carolina which was almost lost during Hurricane Floyd and the flooding that followed. If lost, it would have cut emergency communications, and communications for citizens (in the stranded/cut-off Northern portion of Pitt Co.) from reaching out during and after the hurricane. The MTSO (Mobile Telephone Switching Office) was saved by essentially two things - monumental human effort and volunteerism which kept this building and the NC National Guard building from flooding. These two factors also kept a FEMA 60 KW generator (R) which replaced a flooded-out 65 KW one, from floating out to the site. Photo by DAVE GATLEY/ FEMA News Photo
