Caption InfoField | UNITED STATES MILITARY SMALL ARMS OF THE MID 1800s.
Beginning in 1849, the United States Army garrisoned a series of forts throughout the Oregon Territory. In 1853, the Washington Territory was established and the Army was to play a crucial role in the security and defense of the region throughout it’s Territorial Period (1853-1889). During the Civil War, some Regular Army troops were sent in California or to units in the East. However, several companies were retained in the Washington Territory to provide security and to assist the local volunteer units. This exhibit features artifacts which are typical of those used by both U.S. Army troops and Territorial Volunteers during this important era of Washington's history. Top-to-bottom:
