Description

N321 Hess California League 1888

Two cards from the superrare S.F. Hess & Co. California League N321 series. One reason why the cards might be so rare is that Hess was based in Massachusetts, so collectors were probably not all too keen to collect cards from the other coast. Here is a game report of Jack Lawton's Haverlys beating Pop Hardie's G&M's 4-2 (1st column, under "Rank Umpiring"). The other two teams of the League, the San Francisco Pioneers and the Stocktons (presumably from Stockton), also played.

Taken from the Edwards Collection at the U.S. Library of Congress.
