editFood Is Cheaper And Going Lower, O'Malley Asserts. Commissioner of Markets Predicts Downward Trend Will Continue Until the Pre-War Level Is Reached. Edwin J. O'Malley, Commissioner of Markets, announced yesterday that food was lower in price and would get lower and lower. Indications of material reductions in prices were "apparent on all sides," he said. "Two reasons for the drop are given by food experts," Commissioner O'Malley continued, "namely, the unprecedented drop in foreign exchange, which j practically has etopped all exports of ! food, whlle stimulatlng the importation of foodstuffs, and huge surpluses in cold storage plants and warehouses. "Those in close tooch with the situation declare the trend of prices down- i ward should continue steadily until a : pre-war level is reached. Bumper crops of all food commoditis are expected in 1920, because of the large returns the: crops will yleld to the farmers." Exporters in Dentnark Holland end Sweden, Commissioner O'Malley BaijJ, j had assured him they would ship un- j limited quantlties of potatoes, cabbages and butter to the United States. Early I next week 350,000 pounds of Danish j butter is expected and 8,000 tons of ' potatoes and cabbages are due from ' overseas before March 1. L. V. Cameron, president of the Na- ! tional Sugar Brokers' Association, ! prophesied that sugar would be down j to about 13 cents a pound by May. Commissioner O'Malley called the attention of the Mayor, be'fore the latter ? went to Palm Beach. to information he has showing that the public is beinn imposed upon through SRles of com moditles supposedly obtained from the army and navy, but in fact procured from prlrate sources. Commissioner O'Malley pointed out that the supply of bona fide army and navy foodstuffs ! and other commodities sold by the city was practically exhausted. "Therefore to unload at thia time , upon an unsuspecting public food, clothlng, shoes, etc, of an inferior quality," said Commissioner O'Malley, "secured from sources outside of the army and navy, and creating the falae impression that the same are the sur plus supplies of the United States army ? flnd navy, is a matter that should, I be lieve, be brought to the attention of the Commissioner of Accounts or the District Attoa/iey or such public official | having jurisdictlon over matters of this kind, to determine if the practice described is a vlolation of the statuto, nnd, if so, to take such action as the law warrants to prevent immediately a con tinuance of this obvious injustice to the people." The Commissioner received a reply from the Mayor yesterday in which he requested Mr. O'Malley to bring the matter to the attention of the District Attorney. The Mayor declared it was an imposition upon the Federal government and upon the public.
