Summary edit
DescriptionFormer Savoy (later Roxy) Theatre, Buffalo, New York - 20200506.jpg |
English: The former Savoy Theatre, later the Roxy Theatre, 625 William Street at Krettner Street. Though touted as "fireproof" upon its 1909 construction, it did indeed catch on fire in the late 1980s, at which time much of the brickwork on the side walls was replaced with cinder blocks. In the exquisite Neoclassical design by noted theater architect Henry Spann, contemporary coverage in the Buffalo Evening Times noted the presence of "white Italian marble and much ornamental plaster work with tints", a "floor... of white tile with the name of the theater inlaid with letters of red", and "at either end of the lobby... stairways with white marble steps leading to the balcony". The building functioned as a movie theater originally, first under the name Savoy, then by the 1930s the Roxy or Roxie; it once boasted a Link organ for musical accompaniment for silent films. In the 1970s, it served as the offices of the Buffalo Criterion, long Western New York's African-American paper of record. It has been vacant for many years. |
