Summary
editDescriptionFragmentary opus sectile mosaic depicting the head of the god Sol.jpg |
English: Head of the god Sol Invictus (the Unconquered Sun) rendered in opus sectile mosaic. Opus sectile uses large pieces of carved stone (vs. small tesserae used in opus vermiculatum), and exotic colored and patterned marbles work well in this medium.
From the Mithraeum of Santa Prisca on the Aventine Hil in Rome. This image resembles depictions of the syncretic god, Alexander Helios, Alexander the Great equated with the sun god Helios (literally, ‘the Sun King’). A marble head in the Capitoline Museums looks very much like this. Roman Beginning of the 3rd century CE Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, Rome |
