Abstract

A black-and-white full-length photograph of Grover Cleveland Alexander shaking hands with Charley Weeghman, and Fred Mitchell. All three are depicted in 3/4 profile. Alexander and Mitchell wear Chicago Cubs home uniforms, Weegham wears a three piece suit and derby hat. Alexander, center, extends his right hand to shake hands with Weegham. He looks forward to a point in the distance and to the right of the camera. Weeghman, right, while shaking hands with Alexander, looks forward to Mitchell, making eye contact. Mitchell stands to the left of Alexander. Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by both players, this image was captured in 1918. Pasted on the reverse (not shown) is a newspaper clipping of this published image, cropped to 1/2 length, with a caption that reads, "FROM THE PAST . . . it was a great day for Chicago fans when the Cubs bought Grover Cleveland Alexander in 1918 . . . Here Alex (center) is being wel-comed to the Cubs by Fred Mitchell (left), then the manager, and Charley Weeghman, Club owner of that era. Old Pete remained with the Cubs until 1926. Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in purple ink, are the dates, "NOV 7 1950," and "1950 Nov 6."
