Notes: Source website and various places online misidentifies this as the French Opera House in New Orleans, but it is not. The French Opera House had rectangular windows, rather than the arched windows seen in the photo. This photo clearly matches the Teatro Nacional; compare for example with File:Costa Rica - San José 21.jpg. In 1906 New Orleans photographer John N. Teunisson took part of an inspection tour of banana ports in Central America at the behest of the United Fruit Company [1], apparently he took time to visit the Teatro Nacional in San Jose while on the trip.

Photographer's description: "San José, Costa Rica. Teatro nacional, most costly opera house in Central or South America, built by President Raphael Iglesias at a cost of about $2,000,000." [2]
